
Hostages are landless children that are a Close Family member of another ruler who sends them to another ruler's court as an assurance of peace or submission. Liege or another courtier is a close family member In addition the chance to leave can be modified by the following:

The chance is decreased by −0.1% for each 10 points of opinion above 0 and increased by +0.1% for each 10 points of opinion below 0. If a courtier does not have a court position or minor title they have a 2% chance to leave each month. They can be appointed as councilors, commanders, knights or vassals. If those requirements are met special moves have a 30% chance to appear in the place of a regular move.Courtiers are unlanded characters living at a ruler's court. Special combat moves are either effective or grant additional bonuses but have additional requirements.

If the challenger wins it gains +10 Opinion with Vassals and characters of the same culture and -10% Stress gain for 10 years. The challenger may choose to duel for either Gold, Stress, Weak Hook or Death. If the challenged character wins the challenger gains 100 Stress. If the challenger wins the challenged character is imprisoned. The victor loses Stress while the loser gains Stress.

The victor has a 75% chance to gain a random positive modifier for 10 years and a 25% chance to gain a random negative modifier for 10 years. AI rulers will never challenge someone with 15 Prowess more than them unless their Rationality is very low. Acceptance for a duel is determined by the difference in Prowess as well as the recipient's Opinion and personality. If the recipient refuses the challenge it loses 150 Prestige while the challenger gains 150 Prestige. To start a duel a character must first issue a challenge, which can only be done once every 5 years.
